My dear friend Mel Thomas (I think most of my followers know him, actually) has been transitioning from female to male for the past 18 months or so. Unfortunately he was laid off shortly after he began the transition, losing his health insurance along the way. He’s really wanted top surgery (a complete mastectomy) for a long time, but saving up for it has been difficult. He’s finally put a paypal donation button on his blog site, at the request of his friends. It’s in the right channel at http://www.humancomplaints.com/. It’s an insightful and often hilarious blog about the challenges and lessons he’s learning during his transition, and I urge everyone to read it - but more importantly, if you can, please donate - anything at all helps. He’s the most compassionate, caring person I have ever met, and he deserves to feel comfortable in his own skin - something he hasn’t had since he entered puberty in a girl’s body as a child.
Thanks :)

I found an article online yesterday in my first husband’s local news paper. For 3 pages he goes on about what a wonderful father and great Christian he is. I couldn’t help notice that he completely left out how he was a pothead in high school and a cleptomaniac, how he only passed his classes because I did most of his homework, and oh, that whole part about how he married me and had a son. He skipped right from “I graduated and joined the Airforce” to “I met my wife (the current one) and we had 4 daughters”. No “I stopped paying child support for my boy when he was 2, then panicked when he was 8 and gave him up for adoption so that I wouldn’t get more than the $30K in arrears than I already was.” No “I never sent my child a single birthday card or Christmas gift.” No “I’ve only seen him 3 times in his life, and the last time, he was 4.” No “every 3 years or so I’d call and promise him I was going to call him every week, and then I’d remember once, but then never call again. I’d forget so hard that when he tried to call me, I wasn’t even home…. or just didn’t answer the phone.”
I considered telling the good people of Valdosta, via editorial, these pieces he’d missed - especially the “there’s a bench warrant out for his arrest in the state of Michigan for continued failure to pay child support”, but instead, I took the mention of where he’s employed from the article and looked it up. Then I called the courts in Michigan and gave that employment information to them - information I’ve been looking for for the last 10 years. He’ll be getting a wage garnishment order any day now. Maybe I will be able to pay for my son to go to college next fall, after all. At last, his father will be doing something helpful, albeit involuntarily.
